Retail Sales Associate

The Retail Sales Associate is responsible for providing exceptional customer service for our customers and for and selling merchandise in Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill’s three retail locations.

The Retail Sales Associate must have comprehensive knowledge of the merchandise and daily operation of all three shops and the general environs of Shaker Village.

This position requires an energetic and motivated person with a positive attitude and a friendly personality.



Specific Duties:

  1.     Greets guests and assesses guest needs as they come into stores
  2.     Successfully sells merchandise in all three retail locations
  3.     Accurately operates point of sale cash register in a cheerful, friendly manner
  4.     Stays aware of distribution of merchandise in the 3 locations and back stock
  5.     Knows merchandise in all three locations
  6.     Maintains appearance of shops:  cleaning, stocking, pricing and aiding managers in any way to ensure excellent presentation for our customers
  7.     Checks in merchandise
  8.     Answers phone in a friendly and informative manner
  9.     Gives accurate information about Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, its property and its services.
  10.   Cleans and maintains stockroom and outside shop area.
  11.   Assists in cleaning and organizing warehouse
  12.   Maintains a clean, stocked and organized cash register area
  13.   Works nights and weekends and holidays as required
  14.   Encourages guests to visit all three retail locations
  15.   Demonstrates an ability to cross sell
  16.   Must be willing to be trained to sell admission tickets
  17.   Must be able to multitask and respond in order of importance
  18.   Supports marketing, sales, and special event programs as required
  19.   Observes safe cash handling procedures required by Shaker Village policy and is responsible for cash drawer, cash, checks, gift certificates, and credit card transactions
  20.   Collects property usage waivers and gives directions along with property map to guests
  21.   Knows all emergency procedures (fire, severe weather, guest accident) and responds accordingly
  22.   Turns in all lost and found objects to Front Desk
  23.   Picks up litter in front of shops,  parking lot and other outdoor areas


Standards of Performance:

  1.     Reports to work on time as scheduled. Is well groomed with name badge and appropriate uniform as defined by Shaker Village policy
  2.     Practices excellent customer service skills with an emphasis on individual customer attention and customer satisfaction.
  3.     Demonstrates excellent and clear communication skills and helps ensure optimum communication with all shifts, departments, and management
  4.     Demonstrates positive team spirit by providing assistance to other team members to ensure that standards of guest care and productivity are met
  5.     Makes decisions in the best interest of Shaker Village and in compliance with all applicable procedures
  6.     Understands and uses applicable standard operating procedures
  7.     Knows the hours of operations of the gift shops, hotel, restaurant, touring areas, and nature preserve
  8.     Controls costs by properly using departmental supplies, water, and electricity
  9.     Controls cost by properly handling and caring for merchandise
  10.   Responds to guest complaints and issues appropriately and as directed by Managers
  11.   Reports any unlawful or suspicious activities to direct supervisor immediately
  12.   Attends and participates in staff safety training meetings and classes
  13.   Abides all rules and regulations of Shaker Village
  14.   Promotes Shaker Village and its amenities in a positive manner
  15.   Maintains a high level of professional confidentiality regarding the inner operations of Shaker Village inside and outside the property
  16.   Ensures accurate and timely completion of tasks assigned
  17.   Performs other tasks as assigned by managers


Physical Requirements:

  1.     This position requires the employee to stand for  long periods, bend, stoop, climb stairs, lift up to 50 pounds
  2.     Requires hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity
  3.     Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus
  4.     Must be able to work around plants, animals, candles and food products
  5.     Noise level is moderate



  1. High School Diploma
  2. Prefer two years sales, hospitality, and or customer  service experience
  3. Basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  4. Must be able to speak and write in English always using proper grammar
  5. Ability and willingness to follow guidelines in the Sales Associate job description
